Pool Draining & Backwashing

Please ensure that pool and spa water is never discharged into streets, washes, common areas, storm drains or retention basins. These systems flow directly to washes and can harm wildlife, the desert environment and common-area infrastructure. Preferred options include discharging to the sanitary sewer through your home’s sewer cleanout or using a licensed pool contractor, or discharging onto a landscaped, pervious area on your property where the water can soak into the ground without leaving your property. To locate your sewer cleanout, look for a threaded cap, which may be black or painted to match your home and is often concealed by landscaping. If you cannot locate it, or if a sidewalk or patio has been installed and now covers the opening, contact a plumber

Before draining, test the water to ensure that the free chlorine level is essentially 0 ppm and the pH is within the normal range (approximately 6.5 to 8.5). Discharge the water slowly to prevent erosion, sediment runoff, and flooding. Filter and backwash solids should be removed and disposed of separately so they do not enter storm drains. Never allow water to flow across sidewalks, streets, or neighboring properties, and avoid draining during or immediately before a storm. When in doubt, hire a licensed pool service familiar with proper disposal methods.
 
In addition to violating the governing documents resulting potential association fines, it is illegal under City of Phoenix Water Services codes to improperly discharge pool and spa water. Penalties for this misdemeanor offense range from up to $2,500, six months in jail, and up to three years of probation.
